That's right, a bus driver in Madison, John Nielson, earned $159,258 last year, putting him in the top 20 earners for the city last year. This was made up around 50k basic salary, and almost 110k in overtime and other pay.
He was one of seven bus drivers earning over $100,000 last year, due to seniority clause in their contract. This means the longest serving drivers get the first crack at any overtime, meaning they can essentially work when they want, and as much as they want.
These figures seems very excessive, but even more though when you compare them to some other earners in Madison. The Mayor of Madison earned only $112,880 and the chief of police only earned $143,585. Meaning they earned less than the bus driver, John Nielson.
In his defence though, he earned the money by working excessive amounts of overtime, rather than being overpaid. There is an argument to be had that this overtime would've been better distributed throughout the entire bus driving workforce, but as things stand, their contracts allow it and so its going to keep happening.
